We can’t change every heart, as some are so filled with their own unimaginable pain that they can’t see ours. But we can teach by demonstrating that we are not defined by hatred, biology, or circumstance; we are more accurately represented by our willingness to abandon the false safety of the shadows. We must find a way of being in the world that will allow the world to be in us, to be one with us. We must embrace our sisterhood, our brotherhood, our sameness; these are the only ships that will carry us through the storm of intolerance.
I have lived this philosophy as a transgender woman in a men’s prison for 23 years, striving to shorten the distance between someone’s darkness and the light of love. When we do this, we invite all of humanity to take this journey with us.
Be well. Stay safe.
