My son, John, is 31 years old and has been diagnosed with multiple leaning disabilities, RSD, Epilepsy and Schizophrenia. I believe he has been living with many of these conditions since he was 5 months old. In spite of his challenges he is living independently, speaks at local mental health conferences and has received training as a Peer Specialist with the goal of working in a field where he has great passion, that of recovery from mental illness.
His journey has transformed him, his younger brother and me. They say your kids take you places you never would have gone on your own and I know that to be true! Far from that it has awakened compassion, first for myself, then for others, not a much different goal than the work of Andrew Solomon. I read Far From the Tree with a sense of awe that Mr. Solomon would have the audacity to fold his own story into the story of many others making it even more powerful than anything else I've read. People who face up to who they are as families, as individuals and as a society truly DO transcend the lives they've been given. Thank you, thank you!
